South African Registration Plate Proper Use and Compliance

Welcome to Our Educational Guide

Thank you for choosing our premium plate holders! This guide will help you understand the legal requirements for number plates in South Africa and provide instructions for the proper use of our products.

1. South African Number Plate Regulations

According to South African law, number plates must meet the following requirements for vehicles operating on public roads.

a. Secure Affixation

  • Plates must be permanently affixed using rivets, screws, or another approved method.
  • Magnetic or quick-release holders are not permitted for road use.

b. Clear Visibility

  • Plates must remain unobstructed and securely mounted to ensure they are clearly visible at all times.

c. Standard Dimensions

South African number plates must adhere to specific sizes based on vehicle type:

  • Standard Motor Vehicle Plates: 520mm x 113mm
  • Motorcycle Plates: 250mm x 165mm or 250mm x 200mm
  • Small or Custom Vehicle Plates: Sizes such as 340mm x 200mm may be used where standard sizes do not fit, as long as they comply with SABS regulations.

d. Material and Reflectivity

  • Plates must be made of approved materials that meet the South African Bureau of Standards (SABS) specifications for durability and reflectivity.
  • Reflective materials ensure visibility under different lighting conditions.

2. Proper Use of Our Standard Plate Holders

Our Standard Plate Holders are designed to comply with South African road traffic laws and provide a secure and durable solution for everyday driving. Follow these guidelines to ensure proper installation and compliance:

a. Provided Screws

  • Temporary screws are included to help fix the number plate to the holder if you do not have immediate access to a pop rivet gun.
  • Important: These screws are for temporary use only and must be replaced with pop rivets as soon as possible to comply with South African laws.

b. Provided Pop Rivets

  • Use the provided pop rivets to permanently fix the number plate to the holder. These rivets meet the legal requirements for secure affixation.
  • Ensure you use the accompanying washer at the back of the holder to prevent the pop rivet from cracking the plate holder’s acrylic.

c. Professional Installation

  • If you are unable to install the plate securely with a pop rivet gun, take your plate to a professional installer to ensure compliance with South African regulations.

3. Proper Use of Our Quick Release Display Plate Holders

Our Quick Release Display Plate Holders are designed specifically for off-road, promotional, and event environments. They are not road-legal and should only be used in controlled settings such as:
